  1. Measurements were made running on a treadmill at a 6% incline while running at maximal aerobic capacity. Exercise tests were conducted in June and October of the yearling year and April of the 2-yr-old year. Experimental treatment groups were Control (conventional training under saddle on track only), Short (conventional training under saddle on track with one day per week of high-intensity treadmill exercise for 2 mo) or Long (conventional training under saddle on track with one day per week of high-intensity treadmill exercise for 8 mo). Variables measured or calculated were body mass (Mb), speed to elicit maximum O2 consumption (V o2max), V o2max/Mb, heart rate (HR), cardiac output (Q), Q/Mb, cardiac stroke volume (VS), VS/Mb, hemoglobin concentration ([Hb]), hematocrit (PCV), arterial O2 concentration (CaO2), mixed-venous O2 concentration C v ¯ O 2 , arterial O2 saturation (SaO2), mixed-venous O2 saturation S v ¯ O 2 , end-run plasma lactate concentration ([LA]) and running speed on track with rider required to elicit heart rate of 200 beat/min (V200). * Indicates values are significantly different from the C group. Indicates values are significantly different from the S group. Identical superscripts (a, b, c, d, e, f) indicate values are significantly different from other values with the same superscript (P ≤ 0.05).
