Overview of included and excluded cases. A total of 1752 horses were referred with colic, and 355 of these were excluded from the study for various reasons, resulting in a total of 1397 included horses. The short-term survival rate of medically treated horses was 89.7% (CI 87.9–91.5%). Short-term survival for surgically treated horses was 60.6% (CI 55.3–66.0%). Of those that recovered from surgery, 76.7% survived until discharge from the hospital (CI 71.5–81.9%). DOA Dead on arrival
